CALL TO ACTION

Gear Needed for High School Racers for the Wilderness Traverse

From Allen Wagner, Race Director, Broad Run off Road

Dear our awesome adventure racing community, we have a cool story to share and a call for support / used AR gear.

As you may know, the Fall Foliage Adventure Race in October is being used to raise funds to help start up a gear closet for the Brunswick High School’s Adventure Racing Club “Full Steam Ahead.” The awesome students in this club have been participating in our shorter adventure races the last 3 years. Some of them have recently tried their hands at our 15-hour Spring Bloom race and are hooked and itching to move up and try bigger/longer races.

Recently some of the students (and their teacher/coach Jeremy) got some well deserved attention being featured on The Dark Zone: An Adventure Racing Podcast. As a result of this, they got an invitation from our neighbors up north in Canada to have some of the students participate in their first ever 30-hour adventure race at Wilderness Traverse at the end of July. Exciting stuff!

BHS teacher/coach Jeremy has been hard at work raising funds to cover travel costs and all that logistical stuff and it looks like they’ll be able to get 1 team (possibly 2) up to Canada for the race at the end of July. However as this will be all of the students’ first time doing a 30-hour race, none of them really have the gear required.

So here’s the call to action:

We’re asking if any of you adventure racers have any used (but in good condition) gear you’re willing to donate to the BHS gear closet to enable the students to go tackle their first ever 30-hour race?

The students are most in need of backpacks, but any other equipment you’ve found useful in your AR experience would be welcome (hiking poles, compasses, hydration, paddles, etc.). We’re specifically looking for used (but in good condition) equipment you’re willing to donate, maybe something sitting on a shelf because you upgraded gear at some point. If you have any unused but good working gear sitting around, let’s get it in the hands of students who will put it to good use as they continue getting into the sport.

The race is at the end of July so we’re looking to collect it over the next 3 weeks. Jeremy or I are both willing to drive out to you to pick things up if you are in the D/M/V region, so if you are interested, send us a direct message or email me at racedirector@broadrunoffroad.org and we’ll coordinate.

Thank you in advance to anyone who is able to help, it is very much appreciated.
