Adventure racer extraordinaire, Stephanie Ross, was vetting the course on Wednesday when she ran into some problems with the controls.
On the left is the first checkpoint she encountered that had been bagged by a bear!
"The flag was pretty intact, SI unit on the ground just below, which required the bear to break the thin steel cable attached to the SI unit," she said. "No big deal--tidied everything back up and secured the unit."
The second control was not as lucky.
"The bear did a better job on the second one," she said. "The flag was shredded and the SI unit was missing entirely. I eventually located it about 15' from the flag. As I was surveying the damage and trying to locate the SI unit, I heard some rustling in the woods about 100' away, and I imagined it was the bear, watching what I was doing, and wondering what the heck these orange flags were for, anyway. I imagined the bear might come over, sort of like people do when they encounter orienteers in the woods, and inquire "What's that thing FOR, anyway?" And I would explain it to her, and she would stop mauling our CPs."
Stephanie did not encounter that bear. I wonder how our racers will fare?
