Rd, Bee Caves, and 2322. Go past the Pale Face Ranch exit then turn
right on Pale Face Ranch Road (there is a sign that says Lakecliff
Country Club). Travel 4.5 miles & turn right on CR 414 (follow
Windmere signs), Travel 1.4 miles on CR 414 & turn right at the
Ridge Harbor entrance (Y in road) continue for 1.3 miles to Muleshoe
Bend Park. Once inside the park, take your 2nd right (Trammel Rd East).
Follow this down to the bathrooms and start/finish line area. The start
is in the same location as the XTERRA Trail Run start and will follow
the 6K loop.
The Trail:
Fast,
tight, twisty loop with a lot of short climbs, shaded by cedar &
mesquite trees. There is plenty of sand, rocks, limestone, and dirt.
This is a great trail with a few places that are smooth open coarse
packed sand. And there are a few places that, unless you want a broken
bone, you just have to walk. The only hills we had to walk were the ones
with a lot of golf ball to baseball sized rocks. There are some really
fun 1 to 2 miles sections that have nice flow to them. There are a few
trees that the trail goes through (literally), as well as a lot of
hairpin, uphill turns and some downhill. The paddle is on a finger of
Lake Travis which is usually calm (though sometimes the wind can kick
up). The trail run will be on jeep roads & trails. There will be
several mystery events to keep things interesting.
Schedule of Events:
Registration
opens at 6:00 am. Allow plenty of extra time for parking, and enough
time to pick up your packet, sign your liability release, purchase your
USARA license (or show it if you have one), pay any remaining fees, and
set up your transition area. Pre-race meeting is at 7:30 am. Race start
is at 8:00 am. We will have a kid’s race around 11am just before the
awards ceremony. The kid’s race is free and only about 1-2 minutes
(kid’s 10 and under). All kid’s get a racing bib and medal! Awards
11:15-11:30am.
Hope to see you there!

beautiful single-track hiking trail. You will have a great
pavilion/picnic area overlooking a lake at the finish. The 15K route
follows the same loop as the 5K before breaking off and climbing to the
summit of Decision Point Peak (the highest point on the ranch) where

their charging stations, but more importantly, the knowledge to help you
get set up with the perfect lighting for all your night rides.

We are planning on using the full loop with lower fields, taking the short cut to skip Mule Trace.
We will run the race pretty
much the same as last year with a LeMans style start, running to your
bikes with the 6hr and 12hr races starting together. Fastest
runner will be awarded as usual and yes, you can wear your running
shoes if you prefer (were talking around 150-300 yards depending on the
number of starters).
You'll be wearing a barcode bracelet for timing with our Red Barn Systems barcode scanners. At
the end of the lap, you'll drop your bike, run to the "in" scanner to
finish your lap, tag your team mate who will then scan on the "out"
scanner to start his lap, THEN YOU MUST GO TO TIMING AND SCORING TO BE
SURE THEY HAVE THE CORRECT RIDER ON COURSE AND NUMBER OF LAPS. Multi Lap riders will walk their bike through this same process then ride another lap. Solo Riders will have a separate Scanning table and Scorers.
The left side of the trail along the fence, heading to the finish line, is reserved for solo racers only.
Timing and Scoring will be uploaded to the flat screen monitor AND the internet. Your family and friends can go to RedbarnSystems.com to see live, up to the minute results throughout the day.
Please refer to the Bluff Creek Ranch website for directions and camping prices. There is a $15 gate fee per person the landowner will collect at the gate. Be prepared.
We are excited and look forward to making lasting memories. Race is on, rain or shine.

USARA National Championship Story- Racers brave 30 hours of cold, wet adventure in national championship
Editor
Friday, October 19, 2012 12:00 AM
By Julia Reischel
10/13/12 - 4:46 pm
Canoes line up at the Adventure Race National Championship on the Pepacton
Reservoir yesterday morning. Photo by Carol O'Beirne.
For the past two days, the Catskills have played host to a grueling 30-hour trail of
physical strength and endurance: the 2012 USARA Adventure Race National
Championship.
Adventure racing is a team sport that involves an
obstacle-course-like route of
paddling, hiking, cycling, navigating by
compass, and rappeling down rock
faces. The idea is that just by
finishing the race in one piece, you win.
(There are prizes for the
fastest racers aswell. But the real prize is survival.)
Every year, the US Adventure Racing Association
picks a new location to host
its national championship race. This year,
the 100-mile course was in the
Catskills, beginning with a canoe-paddle
on tne Pepacton Reservoir in Delaware
County yesterday and ending at
the Hudson Valley Resort in Kerhonkson,
Ulster County, this afternoon.
Several locals were onhand at the Pepacton Reservoir at 8am Friday
morning
to watch the race kick-off, and they sent us photos. You can see
all the
images below. As you think about what you did over the 30 hours
this weekend,
take a minute to applaud the racers -- the last
straggling team made it to the
finish line at 4:18pm today. (The offical
race cut-off time was at 2pm.)
Everybody seems to have had a great time. From the USARA's website:
We're picking up on the following themes: 1. It was cold
2. It was tough
3. It was beautiful 4. It was wet 5. It was awesome 6.
It was long
7. It was cold 8. It was awesome.

“Every year, the MWR Wilderness Challenge brings together the best athletes the armed forces has to offer and puts them to the test,” said Michael Bond, event coordinator. “As the competition gets tougher and tougher every year, so do the competitors as more teams battle it out for the title.”
The challenge contains a series of five outdoor adventure races in a team format designed to bring camaraderie, competition and team spirit between all five branches of the Armed Services. Teams participating in this year’s challenge will compete in an 8K mountain run, a 12-mile mountain bike race, a 14-mile forced hike through the mountains, a 13-mile whitewater raft race on the Gauley River and a 7-mile kayak race on the New River. Last year’s winner was Team “HT-18” from Helicopter Training Squadron EIGHTEEN (HT-18), from Naval Air Station Whiting Field, Milton, Fla.
“This is one of the most grueling, hard-fought competitions in the armed forces, so the winning team will be the best of the best in outdoor recreation and physical endurance,” Bond added.
In addition, the United States Adventure Racing Association (USARA) has endorsed the All-Military Wilderness Challenge as a qualifying race for the USARA National Championships. As a USARA sanctioned event, the winner of the Wilderness Challenge will be able to compete on a national level for what is considered the “Heart & Soul” of Adventure Racing in the United States … The USARA Adventure Race National Championship.
“USARA is excited to have the Wilderness Challenge as a 2012 USARA Regional Qualifier,” said Troy Farrar, President USARA. “We hope to see several teams from the Wilderness Challenge represent their military branch and compete in the USARA Adventure Race National Championship.”
Registration is open to all branches of the military. Teams must be comprised of four active duty military, one of which must be female. Teams may also include active reservists, retirees and ROTC. The registration fee is $500 per team. Registration can be made online at www.wildernesschallenge.net or by calling (757) 887-7256.

Untamed New England Adventure Race Sells Out in Record Time
Clay Abney
Wednesday, February 08, 2012 12:00 AM
Only four months after opening registration, the Untamed New England
Adventure Race is sold out with its final spot going to a team from Quebec, Canada.
This is the third straight sellout for the expedition adventure race that has established itself as THE destination adventure race in the Eastern US if not all of North America.
"There are teams from all corners of the continent: California, Alberta (Canada), Florida, and all points between," stated Clay Abney, Marketing Director for Untamed New England. "The race continues to attract international teams from as far away as Ecuador, Sweden and Denmark."
With over four months to go until the racing begins, this marks the fastest the race has ever reached capacity.
The record setting sellout can be attributed to 3 main reasons, explained Race Director Grant Killian: "It's a testimony to our ability as an organization to deliver an authentic adventure race with emphasis on a real back-country experience; we've been organizing great races since 2004 and word has spread about the Untamed New England Adventure Race. It's also validation by our racers who can't wait to explore the wilds of our course in Maine, based from Northern Outdoors Lodge. Finally, it's a statement that the sport of adventure racing is vibrant and capturing the hearts of endurance athletes who are bold enough to give it a try."
Forty-five of the teams racing in Untamed NewEngland are listed at www.UntamedNE.com/Teams.aspx -- but the full race roster will not be announced until March, as a few teams are finishing payments and formalities surrounding their registration.
Teams still interested in participating can join the waiting list, and there are still teams looking to add a teammate or two. Visit www.UntamedNE.com for more information.
