Gator Bait Trail Run
June 16th at Huntsville State Park

The Gator Bait Adventure Race & Trail Run is just a little over 2 weeks away. This heavily wooded park adjoins the Sam Houston National Forest and encloses the 210-acre Lake Raven. The park offers camping, hiking, biking, boating (motor size unrestricted; speed is limited to idle speed), guided horseback trail rides, fishing, swimming, canoe and paddle boat rentals, and nature study. Sign up by midnight this Saturday, June 1st, to receive the early bird discount of $75 per person for the adventure race/$40 - 5K trail run/$50 - 15K trail run. Email us if you plan to race both days for a 15% coupon code on both entries.

Adventure Race Course:

This is a race consisting of a 3-4 mile trail run, a 30-minute paddle in inflatable boats (that we provide) and a 10-mile mountain bike leg. Throw in a mystery event or two and you’re set for a day of adventure. You can race on a 2-person team or solo (you decide). We have 9 different categories and the course is designed for the winner to be sub 2-hour and the average teams to take 2-2.5 hours.

Texas State Championship Series Race:

This is a stand alone race. However, this race is also part of the points series for the Texas State Championship Adventure Race Series (TSCARS), where the top teams in each division will be crowned at the conclusion of the 4-race series. Teams receive points according to their finishing place in each individual race. You only have to race in 2 races to be eligible for series points, but we count the best 3 out of 4 races to crown the state champion.

Here are the 4 races in the 2013 series:

  • 04/20/13: Bluebonnet Adventure Race (TSCARS #1)
  • 05/18/13: Muleshoe Bend Adventure Race (TSCARS #2)
  • 06/01/13: Rock Dallas Adventure Race (TSCARS #3)
  • 06/15/13: Gator Bait Adventure Race (TSCARS #4)

Gator Bait Trail Runs:

There is a 5K and a 15K trail run on Sunday, June 16th.

(There is a $5, or free if you have a state park pass.)

Directions:

The park is 6 miles southwest of Huntsville off of Interstate 45 on Park Road 40. Directions

The Trail:

The Chinquapin trail surrounds Lake Raven, and it is secluded in the Piney trees. It offers enough of a challenge for experienced riders, but is not too difficult for beginners. The climbs are not too steep, but mostly long and gradual over roots and sand. The trees provide lots of shade when it's hot. Bring plenty of water.

Schedule of Events:

Adventure Race: Registration & Packet Pickup 6:00-7:30am, Saturday, June 15th. Allow plenty of extra time for parking, and enough time to pick up your packet, sign your liability release, purchase your USARA license (or show it if you have one), pay any remaining fees, and set up your transition area. Pre-race meeting is at 7:30 am. Race start is at 8:00 am. We will have a kid’s race around 11am just before the awards ceremony. The kid’s race is free and only about 1-2 minutes (kid’s 10 and under). All kid’s get a racing bib and medal! Awards 11:15-11:30am.

Trail Run Races: Registration & Packet Pickup 6:00-7:45am, Sunday morning, June 16th. Allow plenty of time for parking and to pickup your packet, and sign liability release. Pre-race meeting at 7:45. Both Trail runs start at 8am.
